ESPN released a recorded phone conversation between one of Bernie Fine’s alleged victims and Fine’s wife Laurie. In the recording, Laurie Fine is heard telling Bobby Davis, “I know everything that went on, you know. … Bernie has issues, maybe that he’s not aware of, but he has issues. … And you trusted somebody you shouldn’t have trusted.”
That’s a hell of a thing, isn’t it? You trusted somebody you shouldn’t have trusted? That admonition probably would have worked better before any alleged molestations occurred. Nevertheless, Laurie Fine was evidently aware of her husbands dirty deeds. If indeed there are any. Syracuse University seems to think that there’s something to the allegations. They parted company with Fine earlier tonight.
The Syracuse case is similar to the Penn State debacle in the fact that we have an assistant coach who was around young boys when he shouldn’t have been. And we also have enablers around the accused who were in a position to stop the predator’s but failed to do so for whatever reason.
Laurie Fine even went so far as to admit to a sexual relationship with Bobby Davis after he turned 18. How nice of her to wait until he was of legal age. From the tapes, it doesn’t appear that Mrs. Fine cared too much about her husbands activities with young boys. She thought it was just a passing fad that he would soon get over.
In the conversation, Mrs Fine seems to accept that her husband has predilections for boys and that there is nothing she can do about it.
‘You know what, “Go to a place where there’s gay boys. Find yourself a gay boy,”‘ Mrs Fine says.
‘”Get your rocks off, and have it be over with.” He needs that male companionship that I can’t give him.’
Sorry. There’s a huge difference between “male companionship” and molesting children.
Still, no charges have been filed against Bernie Fine. Syracuse Chancellor Nancy Cantor, who took responsibility and fired Fine, sent an email to the school explaining her actions. Head Coach Jim Boeheim had been supportive of his longtime assistant up until today. But statements he made about the victims only wanting money may soon have him in hot water too.
