I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that it’ll be the subtle little things like this that will eventually destroy this country. Not the big things that the media pays attention to, but the little things, that you don’t hear about. Like Interior Secretary Ken Salazar banning uranium mining for 20 years on 1 million acres around the Grand Canyon.
Naturally, Salazar said that it was environmental concerns that led to the ban. Uranium which is necessary for nuclear power, is currently being imported at a 90% clip by the United States. The 1 million acres in the ban zone is where we currently get about half of what we produce ourselves.
Can anyone say cutting off your nose to spite your face?
It appears that not only is this Administration and the environmental left determined to see that we are totally dependent on Middle Eastern countries that hate us for oil; they also appear determined to see to it that we are totally dependent on foreign nations for our ability to produce nuclear power as well.
Today, the U.S. imports 90 percent of the uranium it uses each year, much of it from Russia (whose leaders threaten to point nuclear missiles at our NATO allies, share nuclear know-how with Iran, block sanctions against Syria and claim Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is leader of a secret anti-Putin Russian cabal) and Kazakhstan (squeezed between Russia and China in the battle for regional hegemony). In the best case, these nations are uncertain sources of supply; in the worst case, U.S. dependence gives these countries leverage to use against us.
While Ken Salazar’s ban on uranium mining around the Grand Canyon does nothing to help preserve the environment, it does indeed give hostile countries leverage to use against us. Once again for the leftists and the environmentalists, it’s mission accomplished.
