A young girl from Arizona, Victoria Pasten-Morales, is fighting for her life after having multiple limbs amputated in the last two weeks due to a deadly bacterial infection. The 7-year-old was diagnosed with group A Streptococcus, a bacteria that can lead to severe diseases and infections.
Victoria first started showing symptoms with a fever and vomiting before her lips and hands turned blue. She was rushed to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where she underwent a total of eight surgeries. Unfortunately, doctors had to amputate both of her feet and her right hand in an effort to stop the spread of the infection. Her left hand is still recovering, and her kidneys have also been affected, requiring her to be on a ventilator.
Despite the challenges she is facing, Victoria has been blowing kisses and nodding her head when visited by school staff. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help her family with the financial burden of the medical emergency, raising over $23,000 so far.
Group A Streptococcus can lead to various infections, from mild to severe diseases, according to the CDC. Victoria’s parents are struggling to understand how their daughter contracted the infection, as even doctors are unable to provide an explanation.
The community has come together to support Victoria and her family during this difficult time. It is a reminder of the strength and resilience of a young girl who is fighting against all odds.
