United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its involvement in the Artemis lunar exploration effort by developing an airlock module for NASA’s lunar Gateway. The UAE’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) will contribute the Crew and Science Airlock, which will enable spacewalks and the installation of science payloads. This contribution solidifies the UAE’s role in the ambitious lunar exploration program.
According to a social media post by the crown prince of Dubai, the project is expected to be completed by 2030. In return for their contribution, the UAE will receive a seat on a future Artemis mission. This is a significant opportunity for the UAE to further expand its space program and make a significant contribution to space exploration.
The lunar Gateway, an extension of the International Space Station partnership, aims to support moon landings in the south polar region. Originally, Russia had planned to contribute the airlock module. However, it dropped out, prompting NASA to seek an alternative country to fulfill the role. Boeing had previously discussed the possibility of developing the airlock module with the UAE government.
This agreement is a major milestone for the UAE’s budding space program. The UAE has already achieved success with the Hope mission, an unmanned spacecraft orbiting Mars, and a long-duration mission by an Emirati astronaut at the International Space Station. The UAE’s involvement in the Artemis program further solidifies its position in the global space community.
Additionally, the UAE has expressed interest in participating in the Chinese-led International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) initiative, in addition to the Artemis program. The UAE’s association with the Artemis Accords, which outline best practices for space exploration, has paved the way for this collaboration. However, the UAE previously faced restrictions due to U.S. export control regulations when it signed agreements with China to cooperate on the ILRS.
The development of the airlock module is a historic moment in international collaboration in space exploration. This initiative not only strengthens the partnership at the core of the Artemis program but also highlights the growing prominence of the UAE’s space program on the global stage. The UAE is making significant strides in space exploration and aiming to play a crucial role in shaping the future of humanity’s presence beyond Earth.
