Gil Kenan, the co-writer of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, recently revealed that the film was crafted as a tribute to the late Harold Ramis and his iconic character Egon Spengler. Following the success of Afterlife, Kenan and Jason Reitman co-wrote a sequel titled Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which became an homage to Ivan Reitman after his passing.
Before Ivan Reitman passed away, Kenan and Jason shared their story outline for Frozen Empire with him, an experience Kenan considers an honor as he continues the Ghostbusters franchise. In particular, Kenan hopes to give the current hero, Phoebe Spengler, a trilogy capper in future films.
In a recent interview, Kenan delved into the themes of family within the Ghostbusters films and the inclusion of the beloved Ghostbusters theme song. However, he also mentioned that Rick Moranis was not approached for Frozen Empire, and there were no plans for his character Louis Tully in the film.
Aside from Ghostbusters, Kenan and Reitman have been working on a project titled SNL 1975 since before the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Despite this, they are eager to continue Phoebe Spengler’s saga in potential future films, as she is seen as a special character in the franchise.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is currently playing in theaters, offering fans a new chapter in the beloved franchise. With Kenan and Reitman at the helm, the Ghostbusters legacy appears to be in good hands for future installments.
