Pope Francis Skips Good Friday Procession at Rome’s Colosseum, Raises Concerns About Health
Pope Francis surprised many by skipping the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum to protect his health, the Vatican announced. The 87-year-old pontiff had been expected to preside over the Way of the Cross procession but instead watched from his Vatican home.
The last-minute decision raised concerns about Francis’ health as it suggested sudden changes in his plans. The pope has been battling what he and the Vatican described as a case of the flu, bronchitis, or a cold throughout the winter. This has led to him occasionally needing an aide to read his speeches and skipping his Palm Sunday homily.
Despite his recent health challenges, Francis appeared in good form earlier in the day for a Good Friday liturgy, although he remained seated for most of the event. On Saturday, he is scheduled to preside over a lengthy evening Easter Vigil and an Easter Sunday Mass in the piazza.
In his memoirs, the Pope mentioned that he is not suffering from any health problems that would require him to resign. However, he has been using a wheelchair due to knee issues and had surgery last year.
The decision to skip the Good Friday procession has sparked concerns among pilgrims and followers of the Catholic faith. Many are hoping for a swift recovery for the beloved Pope Francis as he continues to carry out his duties during the Easter season.
