The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about a concerning spike in measles cases that is putting the disease’s elimination status in the United States at risk. With more than 120 reported cases so far this year, the number has doubled compared to last year.
This rise in measles cases is particularly alarming for infants and undervaccinated communities. Globally, measles cases have also been on the rise, with a staggering 9 million cases reported in 2022. Shockingly, nearly half of the cases in the U.S. this year have occurred in children under 5, with a third in adults 20 years and older.
What’s most concerning is that more than 80% of the cases involved unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. Measles symptoms can lead to serious complications such as brain swelling, pneumonia, and even death.
If a measles outbreak persists for a year or more, the U.S. could lose its elimination status. Health officials are urging the importance of vaccination to prevent the spread of measles in the country. It is crucial for individuals to ensure they are up to date on their measles vaccination to protect themselves and others from this highly contagious and dangerous disease. Stay informed and stay protected.
