Student protesters at Columbia University have defiantly reassembled their anti-Israel tent encampment less than 24 hours after over 100 people were arrested by the NYPD at the original site. Video footage captured dozens of students with blankets and Palestinian flags on the lawn opposite the original protest location.
Construction materials were left scattered on the original site, raising questions about whether they were intentionally placed to deter the protesters from setting up tents again. However, the resilient students regrouped on a different lawn in the early hours, unfurling a sign inviting others to “Join Us” at their new “Gaza Solidarity encampment.”
The decision to involve the NYPD was authorized by university president Minouche Shafik, who cited concerns about community safety and a violation of rules and policies. Prior to the intervention, the administration had warned participants that they would face potential suspension pending an investigation if they did not vacate the area by a specified time.
The ongoing protest at Columbia University highlights the passionate support for the Palestinian cause among some students, and the determination to continue despite facing consequences from the administration. Stay tuned to Poh Diaries for further updates on this developing story.
