Multiple tornadoes tore through Nebraska and Iowa, causing widespread destruction and leaving communities reeling. Elkhorn in Omaha was among the hardest-hit areas, with homes and businesses suffering severe damage.
In Minden, Iowa, a large tornado ripped through the town, leaving mangled structures and debris scattered throughout. Pottawattamie County in Iowa reported storm-related injuries and significant damage to homes and businesses, while Nebraska and Douglas counties reported no injuries but substantial property damage.
The severe weather threat is expected to continue, with dangerous storms possible from Michigan to Texas. A tornado watch is in effect for parts of Oklahoma and Texas until 1 p.m. Saturday, as cleanup efforts are already underway in the affected communities.
Data shows nearly 80 tornado reports in at least five states on Friday alone, prompting Iowa Governor to issue a disaster proclamation. More than 50 million people are under threat of severe weather on Saturday from the Southern Plains into the Great Lakes region, with the potential for strong tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, baseball-sized hail, and flash flooding.
The complexity of the severe weather episode has left authorities on high alert, as Sunday could still see storms from Texas to Wisconsin depending on the severity of Saturday night’s storms. Communities are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this turbulent weather period.
