NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft has reached a significant milestone in its mission to search for conditions suitable for life on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. The spacecraft has now received its massive dish-shaped high-gain antenna, which is central to its goals. Measuring 10 feet across, the antenna is the largest and most prominent of the antennas on the Europa Clipper.
The purpose of the high-gain antenna is to transmit high-powered signals back to NASA’s Deep Space Network on Earth, ensuring a high rate of transmission of scientific data. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California carefully attached the precision-engineered antenna to the spacecraft over several hours in a meticulously choreographed process. The antenna has successfully passed all standalone testing and will undergo further verification of its functionality.
Over the past year, the antenna has undergone extensive testing, including beam data testing, vibration testing, and thermal vacuum testing to ensure its durability in the harsh conditions of outer space. With the installation of the high-gain antenna, the Europa Clipper mission is now one step closer to its planned launch in October 2024 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Once the spacecraft is launched, it will focus nine science instruments on Europa to collect crucial data about its geology, surface, subsurface ocean, atmosphere, and magnetic field. The high-gain antenna will then transmit this data back to Earth in a high-powered signal that will take approximately 33 to 52 minutes. This will provide a greater amount of data than previous Jupiter missions.
The installation of the high-gain antenna was completed by a team of engineers and technicians from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The team has been working on the antenna since 2014. Their successful installation brings the Europa Clipper spacecraft one step closer to embarking on its mission of exploring Europa and searching for signs of habitability.
