A tragedy struck George, South Africa when a multi-story apartment complex collapsed on Monday afternoon, trapping 49 construction workers under the debris for over 12 hours. The incident has claimed the lives of five workers, while 21 have been rescued and rushed to hospitals, 11 of them in critical condition.
The rescue effort was a race against time, with over 100 emergency responders and sniffer dogs tirelessly working to locate and save those trapped. The operation was further aided by large cranes and spotlights brought in to navigate the challenging terrain.
Although contact has been made with 11 trapped workers, the process of breaking through the concrete remains difficult. The cause of the collapse is still unknown as investigations are ongoing.
Local charity organization Gift of the Givers played a crucial role in supporting the search and rescue mission by providing additional resources and sniffer dogs. The Western Cape government, led by Premier Alan Winde, is overseeing the operation and sending in more resources to assist.
The national government has also been briefed on the situation and is closely monitoring the ongoing rescue efforts. The community is coming together in this time of crisis, showcasing resilience and solidarity in the face of tragedy.
