Mexican President Cuts Ties with Ecuador Over Arrest of Former Vice President Seeking Asylum
In a shocking turn of events, Mexican President has announced the breaking off of diplomatic ties with Ecuador following the arrest of former Vice President Jorge Glas, who was seeking asylum in the Mexican Embassy in Quito.
Glas, who was indicted on corruption charges, had been residing in the Mexican Embassy since December. However, Ecuadorian police forcefully entered the embassy to arrest him, prompting strong reactions from Mexican officials. A Mexican consulate official expressed concern for Glas’ safety, calling the arrest “crazy” and “outside the norm.”
While Ecuador’s presidency defended the arrest, stating that they will not allow criminals to stay free in the country, Mexican President condemned Glas’ detention as an “authoritarian act” and a violation of international law. Mexico plans to take the case to the International Court of Justice, citing the inviolability of diplomatic premises under the Vienna treaties.
Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations accused Ecuador of violating international law and injuring diplomats during the arrest. Tensions between the two countries had already been high after statements made by Mexico’s president regarding Ecuador’s past elections, leading to Ecuador declaring the Mexican ambassador persona non grata in retaliation.
The situation remains fluid as both countries stand firm in their positions, with the future of their diplomatic relations hanging in the balance. Stay tuned to ‘Poh Diaries’ for more updates on this developing story.
