In a tragic incident on the Apple River in St. Croix County, Nicolae Miu, a 54-year-old Minnesota man, was convicted in the slaying of high school student Isaac Schuman and the stabbing of four other individuals who were tubing on the river. Miu was found guilty of first-degree reckless homicide, four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and one count of battery.
The incident took place in late July 2022, when Miu reportedly attacked the group after accusations of approaching children in the water. According to reports, Miu claimed he was searching for a lost cellphone using a snorkel and goggles, but bystanders accused him of bothering children in the water. An altercation broke out after Miu punched a woman, ultimately leading to the stabbing of Schuman and three other individuals.
Despite Miu’s claims of self-defense and provocation, prosecutors argued that he had opportunities to de-escalate the situation. The Wisconsin circuit court jury ultimately found Miu guilty of the charges brought against him.
Isaac Schuman, the victim of the fatal stabbing, was described as an honor roll student with aspirations of studying electrical engineering at several universities. The tragic incident has left the community in mourning and has highlighted the importance of conflict resolution and de-escalation in potentially dangerous situations.
