AT&T Investigates Data Breach Exposing Personal Information of 70 Million Customers
AT&T is currently facing a major data breach involving the personal information of more than 70 million current and former customers that has been leaked on the dark web. The breach, which occurred about two weeks ago, includes sensitive data such as social security numbers, full names, email and mailing addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, account numbers, and passcodes.
Although the company has not yet identified the source of the leak, they have taken immediate action by resetting passcodes for impacted customers and offering complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services. External cybersecurity experts have also been brought in to assist with the investigation.
This is not the first time AT&T has experienced a data breach, with a previous incident in March 2023 where 9 million wireless customers’ information was accessed. A recent analysis has linked a data leak of AT&T customer data to the company, with some customers confirming the accuracy of the leaked information.
U.S. telecommunications providers, including AT&T, have been frequent targets for hackers, with third-party breaches being attributed as the cause of many data leaks. The FCC updated its data breach notification rules last December to ensure that telecommunications providers protect customer information. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the importance of modernizing policies in the digital age.
The issue of data breaches in the telecommunications industry is ongoing, with recent leaks at T-Mobile and Verizon also impacting millions of customers. AT&T is working diligently to investigate the breach and protect the personal information of their customers. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
