Climate Change Impacts U.S. Forests, Hindering Carbon Sink Potential
A recent study led by UF Biology researchers has shed light on the varying impacts of climate change on forests across the United States. With forests being crucial carbon sinks, sequestering about 25% of human carbon emissions annually, understanding how climate change affects their growth and productivity is of utmost importance.
The study, which analyzed data from 1999 to 2020, revealed that while the Eastern regions of the U.S. have experienced slightly accelerated forest growth, the Western regions have suffered a notable slowdown. Severe climate change impacts, such as droughts and forest pathogens, have outweighed the positive effects of carbon dioxide fertilization, hindering tree growth in the West.
These findings challenge the assumption that forests will continue to increase their carbon storage ability, especially in the Western U.S. Climate change has region-specific influences on forests, pushing some to become carbon sources instead of sinks. The decline in forest productivity in the Western U.S. is primarily attributed to decreased tree growth rates, rather than increased tree mortality.
