Bethesda Studios’ highly anticipated game, Starfield, is set to make waves in the gaming world with its unique approach to the protagonist. Unlike their previous hit, Fallout 4, Starfield will feature a silent protagonist, a decision influenced by the negative fan reaction to Fallout 4’s voiced hero.
Bethesda initially considered giving their hero a voice and even recorded a few lines of dialogue. However, after careful consideration, they decided against it. The main goal was to provide players with a maximum range of expression and the freedom to be the person they want to be in the game.
This trend of silent protagonists in role-playing games (RPGs) has been gaining popularity due to the customization options available to players. Games like Baldur’s Gate 3 have also opted for unvoiced customizable heroes, allowing players to truly immerse themselves in their own unique character.
Nevertheless, there have been successful examples of voiced heroes in RPGs, such as the renowned Mass Effect series. However, Bethesda is confident that Starfield’s over 200,000 lines of spoken dialogue will create a rich, immersive world even without a voiced protagonist.
In addition to the silent protagonist, Starfield will also introduce first-person dialogue trees, a feature reminiscent of Bethesda’s previous RPGs like Skyrim and Fallout 3. This feature will enhance player immersion and bring the world of Starfield to life.
Excitement is building as the release date for Starfield approaches. Set to launch globally on September 1, the game will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Fans of Bethesda can’t wait to explore the vast universe of Starfield and experience the freedom and possibilities that a silent protagonist can offer.
