The New York Times recently reported on internal turmoil within OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research organization, involving CEO Sam Altman. The article revealed that two top executives, including Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, had expressed concerns about Altman’s leadership before his sudden departure in November.
The board of OpenAI cited a lack of confidence in Altman’s leadership and communication skills as the reasons for his exit. Murati stepped in as interim CEO before Altman quickly returned to his position. However, concerns were also raised by Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and chief scientist of OpenAI, in October.
According to reports, some board members feared that if the issues with Altman were not addressed, Sutskever and Murati might also leave the company. A report from the law firm WilmerHale investigating the events surrounding Altman’s departure and return is expected to be released soon.
OpenAI, Murati, and Sutskever have not yet responded to requests for comments on the matter. However, an OpenAI spokesperson stated that the leadership team supported Altman’s return and emphasized his strong partnership with Murati.
In a message to OpenAI staff, Murati disputed the Times article and highlighted her open communication with Altman. The internal dynamics at OpenAI have garnered attention as the organization continues to be a key player in the field of artificial intelligence research.
