New COVID Variant JN.1 Classified as “Variant of Interest” by WHO
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently designated a new COVID variant, JN.1, as a “variant of interest” due to its high number of mutations and its ability to evade immunity. This variant has emerged from another genetically distinct variant, BA.2.86, which was already known for its potential to cause significant impact.
One distinguishing characteristic of JN.1 is the major mutation L455S, which enhances its ability to evade antibodies from prior infection and vaccination. However, it is still unclear whether JN.1 exhibits different symptoms compared to other Omicron variants.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the severity and danger associated with JN.1, experts continue to study its impact on hospitalizations and deaths. It is believed that COVID vaccines offer good protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death caused by JN.1.
To minimize the risk of transmission, experts recommend wearing masks, especially in indoor public spaces. Additionally, an antiviral medication called Paxlovid has proven effective against JN.1. However, it is important for patients to complete the full course of treatment as its effectiveness may be compromised if stopped midway.
At-home COVID tests can still detect JN.1; however, accuracy may vary depending on the timing of the test. The WHO’s designation of JN.1 as a “variant of interest” calls for increased vigilance and genetic sequencing by health authorities worldwide.
JN.1 is rapidly spreading and outcompeting other variants in several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Experts believe that the origins of JN.1 and BA.2.86 can be traced back to immunocompromised individuals with long-term infections.
It is uncertain how JN.1 will continue to evolve or whether it will die out like other COVID strains in the future. Currently, variant trackers have not assigned a new nickname to JN.1 and continue to reference it as a member of the Pirola family.
As the world grapples with the ongoing COVID pandemic, it is crucial for authorities and individuals to stay informed about the latest developments regarding new variants and continue adhering to preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
