Title: India Affirms Commitment to Peace and Stability in the Indo-Pacific Region
Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently addressed the importance of freedom of navigation and adherence to international norms in the Indo-Pacific region. Speaking at the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus), Singh emphasized the need for collaboration among Asean countries and their dialogue partners to ensure peace, prosperity, and security in the region.
Acknowledging the significance of dialogue and diplomacy in promoting global peace and stability, Singh called for a shift from an “us versus them” mindset. He underscored that the current era does not favor warfare, but rather demands practical and result-oriented cooperation to enhance maritime security.
The ADMM-Plus, consisting of 10 Asean countries along with India, China, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, and the US as dialogue partners, aims to strengthen regional security initiatives. During the meeting, India pledged its commitment to the ADMM-Plus in fostering practical cooperation for advancing maritime security.
Singh held a conversation with his US counterpart, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, to review progress in bilateral strategic ties and efforts towards enhancing Asean centrality in the Indo-Pacific. The discussion highlighted the significance of India-US collaboration in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
However, the meeting drew attention to China’s aggressive behavior in the South China Sea and the military confrontation in eastern Ladakh, which have contributed to heightened tensions. Notably, China and Russia were represented by senior officials instead of their respective defense ministers at the ADMM-Plus gathering.
In conclusion, the ADMM-Plus meeting serves as a platform for countries in the Indo-Pacific region to emphasize the importance of maintaining peace and stability. India’s commitment to practical cooperation and its emphasis on the principles of freedom of navigation and adherence to international norms signify its dedication to securing the region’s future. Collaborative efforts among Asean countries and their partners are crucial for addressing challenges and promoting peace in the Indo-Pacific.
